The Adventures of Dove Step the Sheep-Chapter 6

"It's bedtime-time" said Dove as he fell asheep!

The next morning the flock grazed by a pond. It was formed when the snow melted so fast that the water pushed broken tree limbs, rocks and mud against some bounders.

The water was cool and clear. There were so many new things to explore and learn about. Dove noticed a green lump with eyes. When it blinked Dove realized that only one eye closed at a time. Dove was curious if this green lump was green food nor not. So, Dove stuck his pink tongue out to taste this lump of a bump on a log. WOW! Was he surprised when this lump stuck a tongue out that then touched his! It was SLIMY!

It didn't make any noise and didn't try to get away. Turns out his throat was sore. You might say he had a frog in his throat so he couldn't croak!

Soon Dove saw a patch of green in the water and wondered if this was food. It didn't have eyes so he was hopeful. He pulled some up with his tongue and nibbled on it.

As he chewed on it he could taste sour, spicy and a little sweet. Before he got a chance to take another bite he realized that his cheeks were numb. He was worried he might bite his cheeks and even worse, would they stay numb forever.

Dove scampered over to his mom. He tried to talk to his mom but it came out discombobulated. He was worried she couldn't understand him. Boy it sucks to have a numb mouth! Fortunately his mom had seen what he had just eaten. remembering her first time eating moss she knew the effects and that they are really short lived.

Dove panicked as he spoke, "Mumble jumble-ow! stumble bumple-ever!" Dove's mom kind of chuckled and told him the numbness would wear off within a few minutes. She also counseled to remember the effects of eating moss just in case he ever bites his cheeks. Because the moss helps that feel better really fast.

Dove was beginning to become aware of a power he has of being able to know the use of plants just by walking up to it and thinking the question, "What are you best used for?" Then he could sense a reply from the plant, "I'm....well.... I think I'm best useful for numbing."

Dove scampered back to the pond and snatched another mouthful of moss. He walked toward the shepherd. He knew he wouldn't be able to talk or feel with his mouth but it was for a friend. The price of carrying the moss for his friend was more than worth the numbing. Mimi took a little nibble of the moss. Soon her cheeks were numb. Then she realized that was ok. Then dove noticed something colorful in the air. It was flying but had no wings. His mom said, "That's a kite Dove."

Dove Step found a creepy crawly. It looked soft and fuzzy looking.
It had stripes on the side. Dove inched his nose up near it to sniff it and found it very soft and fuzzy. It kept inching along. Soon it was on a tipsy-turvy rock, which quickly toppled over. Dove Step quickly lifted the crawly safely on his nose and walked gingerly to a nearby bush and set it free.

Dove found a new flower! A wild geranium. Such a delicate pink splash of joy on a summer's morn.
Dove nibbled a little tiny piece of the petal. At first he expected it to taste spicy. He nibbled one whole petal and found that there really wasn't much flavor. Then he tried another petal and smashed it between his teeth and found it quite bitter. Dove mused, "I suppose some flowers are better to look at than to much on!"

Dove overheard the Farmer's wife as she called to her son, "Hey D!" "What?" "I just spilled water on myself." "Yeah!" said D.

Dove found something strange on the ground.
He touched it with his tongue. It had an odd metal-like taste to it. Not necessarily a nasty taste-just different.

Dove noticed a piece of fluff floating gently on the breeze, and wondered, "What is this?"
He followed it as it floated up and down on the air. He would get close and then the fluff would float up or down but it seemed to always float away. He was working up a bit of exercise and huffing a bit when at the tip of his nose a new piece of fluff floated into range just as he was inhaling and it disappeared! UP HIS NOSE!! Oh! Disgust! Have you ever seen a sheep have a sneezing fit? Wow! It's hi-larious! The sneezing and snorting followed by a bit of bucking and turning.

Finally the cottonwood fluff flew from his nostrils with one of his snorts and he could calm down and ease his breathing to normal. The fluff lost its fluffiness and now was a ball of wet-ooey-gooey snot. Nasty! Dove walked toward the shephard.
