Dad Wore Homemade Baseball Caps
Dad had an extra-large sized head. Probably more like a double extra-large. He had the hardest time finding hats that would fit. With his work for the City Water Department, outside, in the sun all day, digging holes and such, he really needed a hat with a brim. He had one that almost fit but, not really.
Mom, being the creative, industrious, clever person she was, took that hat apart. Those parts became a pattern. She made some measurements from his head and adjusted the pattern appropriately. Money was right and in the 1960’s they didn’t really have a wide selection of ‘stuff’ at the fabric store to stiffen that brim sufficiently. Her creative juices kicked in and she used a plastic bleach bottle to stiffen the fabric of the brim. He wanted it a tad bit longer/deeper than the average brim.
They jokingly referred to the brim of his hat as a duck bill. Now you can Google a hat pattern in several different styles. Mom made do with what she had. She was very clever and dad was very lucky to have a woman like her.
And she only had an old Singer Featherweight sewing machine-you know, post treadle but still no back-stitch option!
