Mistakes and Sins

Sometimes when you 'receive' something you're not aware of what all you've signed up for.

Having been taught the concept of you do what you're told by anyone even a second older than you because they're your superior and not being taught you have a right and a responsibility to say NO when someone is telling you to do something you don't feel right about... Well, I can understand why things happen.

The thought never occurred to me that later in life I might be faced with being judged by the peers of my children about choices I made as a teen. But there you have it-I wasn't thinking.

Odd isn't it? Odd that when you think what you dream for is what you want most but being a responsible person, when 'life happens' (loosely translated that means poor choices), what you most want for your whole life is before you.

I 'wanted' to be a veterinarian. I wanted a degree. I wanted a career. I wanted financial security. These were the things I dreamed for myself.

I raised a family and have never been sorry for it-qualified with sorrowful moments yes-but that's to be expected.

Maybe that's why I've had such an affinity to this song. Watching the youtube video version helps you understand a fuller meaning of this song.

Kenny Chesney, There Goes My Life

All he could think about was I'm too young for this
Got my whole life ahead
hell I'm just a kid myself
how I'm gonna raise one

All he could see were his dreams going up in smoke
So much for ditching this town and hanging out on the coast
Oh well, those plans are long gone

And he said
there goes my life
there goes my future, my everything
might as well kiss it all good-bye
there goes my life.......

A couple years of up all night and a few thousand diapers later
That mistake he thought he made covers up the refrigerator
Oh yeah..........he loves that little girl.

Momma's waiting to tuck her in
as she fumbles up those stairs
she smiles back at him dragging that teddy bear
sleep tight, blue eyes and bouncing curls

And he smiles
there goes my life
there goes my future my everything
I love you, daddy goodnight
there goes my life

She had that Honda loaded down
with Abercrombie clothes and 15 pairs of shoes and his American Express
he checked the oil, slammed the hood, said your good to go
she hugged ‘em both and headed off to the west coast

And he cried
there goes my life
there goes my future, my everything
I love you
baby good-bye
There goes my life
There goes my life
Baby good-bye
Baby good-bye
There goes my life

Montgomery Gentry - Something To Be Proud Of

There's a story that my daddy tells religiously
Like clockwork every time he sees an opening
In a conversation about the way things used to be
Well I'd just roll my eyes and make a bee-line for the door
But I'd always wind up starry-eyed, cross-legged on the floor
Hanging on to every word
Man, the things I heard

It was harder times and longer days
Five miles to school, uphill both ways
We were cane switch raised, and dirt floor poor
'Course that was back before the war
Yeah, your uncle and I made quite a pair
Flying F-15's through hostile air
He went down but they missed me by a hair
He'd always stop right there and say...

That's something to be proud of
That's a life you can hang your hat on
That's a chin held high as the tears fall down
A gut sucked in, a chest stuck out
Like a small town flag a-flyin'
Or a newborn baby cryin'
In the arms of the woman that you love
That's something to be proud of

Son graduatin' college, that was mama's dream
But I was on my way to anywhere else when I turned 18
Cuz when you gotta fast car you think you've got everything
I learned quick those GTO's don't run on faith
I ended up broken down in some town north of L.A.
Working maximum hours for minimum wage
Well, I fell in love, next thing I know
The babies came, the car got sold
I sure do miss that old hot rod
But you sure save gas in them foreign jobs
Dad, I wonder if I ever let you down
If you're ashamed how I turned out
Well, he lowered his voice, then he raised his brow
Said, lemme tell ya right now

That's something to be proud of
That's a life you can hang your hat on
You don't need to make a million
Just be thankful to be workin'
If you're doing what you're able
And putting food there on the table
And providing for the family that you love
That's something to be proud of

And if all you ever really do is the best you can
Well, you did it man

That's something to be proud of
That's a life you can hang your hat on
That's a chin held high as the tears fall down
A gut sucked in, a chest stuck out
Like a small town flag a-flyin'
Or a newborn baby cryin'
In the arms of the woman that you love
That's something to be proud of
That's something to be proud of
Yeah, that's something to be proud of
That's something to be proud of
Now that's something to be proud of
