What's that About Nasty Little Things and Come Uppances?

Yeah-I have a child who loves to quote that for LOTS of things and reasons. Bottom line is, it's a truth.

Take the 'entitlement generation' (Yes take them-far away from us!) They have been reared with the idea that they can and deserve to have just about anything they want. I had always thought of them as the younger generation-but after what I recently read about Michele O.-I'm starting to wonder if there isn't a half generation older that is stuck in that rut.

Setting this all aside, the nation is under some pretty stiff financial duress. A good reality check for people of an 'entitlement' mentality. Fortunately there are quite a few good songs that are there to strengthen and fortify the non-entitlement generation and to teach those of the entitlement generation the inalienable truths that we know to be true, if they're willing to learn.

Yes, this is leading up to another song (or two) because another child of mine recently mentioned, "It is a common occurrence during hard times for the most positive and upbeat songs to come from the soul." Yippin-I agree. So without further adieu, here they are!

Sugarland, It Happens

Missed my alarm clock ringing
Woke up, telephone screaming
Boss man singing his same old song
Rolled in late about an hour
no cup of coffee, no shower
Walk of shame with two different shoes on

Now it's poor me, why me, oh me, boring
The same old worn out, blah, blah story
There's no good explanation for it at all

Chorus:
Ain't no rhyme or reason
No complicated meaning
Ain't no need to over-think it
Let go, laughing
Life don't go quite like you planned it
We try so hard to understand it
The irrefutable, indisputable fact is
It happens

My trusty-rusty had a flat
I borrowed my neighbors Cadillac
"I'll be right back," going down to Wally World
That yellow light turned red too quickly
Knew that truck the moment it hit me
Out stepped my ex and his new girl
("Sorry 'bout your neck baby")

But it's poor me, why me, oh me, boring
The same old worn out, blah, blah story
There's no good explanation for it at all

Chorus:
Ain't no rhyme or reason
No complicated meaning
Ain't no need to over-think it
Let go, laughing
Life don't go quite like you planned it
We try so hard to understand it
The irrefutable, indisputable fact is
It happens
Chorus:
Ain't no rhyme or reason
No complicated meaning
Ain't no need to over-think it
Let go, laughing
Life don't go quite like you planned it
We try so hard to understand it
The irrefutable, indisputable fact is
Yeah, the irrefutable, indisputable, absoluteable, totally beautiful fact is...pshhhhh, it happens

Now that one should have had you laughing and relating to some aspects of it. This next one has some down to earth commonsense. Now remember, I believe that where he's talking about an album or CD of the Best of Patsy Cline (I have one of them), you ought to be inserting your fav-whether it's the Beatles Anthology or some Depeche Mode stuff.

Also, I don't do the wine stuff-pass me the water with a slice of lemon in it, please.

Darius Rucker, Alright

Alright, Alright
Yeah it's alright, alright

Don't need no five star reservations
I've got spaghetti and a cheap bottle of wine
Don't need no concert in the city
I've got a stereo and the best of Patsy Cline
Ain't got no caviar no Dom Perignon
But as far as I can see, I've got everything I want

Cause I've got a roof over my head,
the woman I love laying in my bed
And it's alright, alright
I've got shoes under my feet
Forever in her eyes staring back at me
And it's alright, alright, yeah
And I've got all I need
And it's alright by me

Maybe later on we'll walk down to the river
Lay on a blanket and stare up at the moon
It may not be no French Riviera
But it's all the same to me as long as I’m with you

It may be a simple life, but that's okay
If you ask me baby, I think I've got it made

Cause I've got a roof over my head,
the woman I love laying in my bed
And it's alright, alright
I got shoes under my feet
Forever in her eyes staring back at me
And it's alright, alright, yeah
And I've got all I need
And it's alright by me

It's alright by me, yeah-yeah
When I lay down at night I thank the Lord above
For giving me everything I ever could dream of

Cause I got-a roof over my head,
the woman I love laying in my bed
And it's alright, alright, alright, alright
I've got shoes under my feet
Forever in her eyes staring back at me
And it's alright, alright, alright
And I've got all I need, yeah
I've got all I need
And it's alright by me
Oh yeah, it's alright by me

Some of the entitlement generation needs to learn there's nothing wrong with pulling yourself up by the bootstraps and gettin on with life. Keeping an eternal focus on things helps. This song kind of relays a lot of that sentiment to me.

Darryl Worley, Sounds Like Life to Me

Got a call last night from an old friend’s wife
Said I hate to bother you
Johnny Ray fell off the wagon
He’s been gone all afternoon
Well, I know my buddy so I drove to Skully’s
And found him at the bar
I say hey man, what’s going on
He said I don’t know where to start

Sarah’s old car’s about to fall apart
And the washer quit last week
We had to put momma in the nursing home
And the baby’s cutting teeth
I didn’t get much work this week
And I got bills to pay
I said I know this ain’t what you wanna hear
But it’s what I’m gonna say

(Chorus)
Sounds like life to me it, it ain’t no fantasy
It’s just a common case of everyday reality
Man I know it’s tough but you gotta suck it up
To hear you talk you’re caught up in some tragedy
It sounds like life to me

Well his face turned red and he shook his head
He said you don’t understand
Three kids and a wife depend on me
And I’m just one man
To top it off I just found out
That Sarah’s 2 months late
I said hey bartender set us up a round
We need to celebrate

(Chorus)
Sounds like life to me, plain old destiny
Yeah the only thing for certain is uncertainty
You gotta hold on tight just enjoy the ride
Get used to all this unpredictability
Sounds like life

Man I know it’s tough but you gotta suck it up
To hear you talk, you’re caught up in some tragedy
Sounds like life to me
Sounds like life

Sounds like life to me
Sounds like life to me

Sounds like life
Mmmmmmmm

It really is easy to complain about the me and my and so sorry for my situation. Part of pulling up by bootstraps is to get over it and get on with it, so this song fits too.

Kenny Chesney with Dave Matthews, I'm Alive

So damn easy to say that life’s so hard
Everybody’s got their share of battle scars
As for me I’d like to thank my lucky stars that
I’m alive, and well

It’d be easy to add up all the pain
And all the dreams you sat and watched go up in flames
Dwell on the wreckage as it smolders in the rain
But not me, I’m alive

And today you know that’s good enough for me
Breathin' in and out's a blessin' can’t you see
Today's the first day of the rest of my life
And I’m alive, and well
I’m alive, and well

Stars are dancin’ on the water here tonight
It’s good for the soul, when there’s not a soul in sight
But this boat has caught its wind and brought me back to life
Now I’m alive, and well

And today you know that’s good enough for me
Breathin' in and out's a blessing can’t you see
Today is the first day of the rest of my life
Now I’m alive, and well
Yeah I’m alive, and well

Very bottom line of this train of thought is that you, me, each of us, needs to worry more about the other guy than ourselves. I love this song for how it reminds us of this important fact. Ya really need to listen to this one-it's free, just copy/paste the author and title in a Youtube search and click on the first one that pops up. Having a varied Christian background (Episcopalian, Church of Christ, Baptist, Jehovah's Witness), I recognize his final "anymore" as being sung one of the several ways the 'amen' in a hymn of prayer is sung. Yeah-go listen to it.

Trace Adkins, All I ask for Anymore

It was a home run when the game was tied
A pick-up truck when I could drive
One pink line when Katie said I'm late
It was a passing grade, a pretty girl
All the money in the world
What mattered then kept changing every day

But when I bow my head tonight
There'll be no me, myself and I
Just watch my wife and kids please Lord
That's all I ask for any more

Nowadays it's crazy how
A passing storm, a siren sound
Can make me drop it all and pick up the phone
To hear her say that all's okay
Is all I need to know these days
Can't wait to see their faces when I get home

And when I bow my head tonight
There'll be no me, myself and I
Just watch my wife and kids please Lord
That's all I ask for any more

Let 'em outlive me by a hundred years
Let their laughter dry up all their tears
Let 'em love and be loved back like I have been

And when I bow my head tonight
There'll be no me, myself and I
Just watch my wife and kids please Lord
That's all I ask for any more

That's all that matters anymore
