Say What?!!!

My hairdresser mentioned a high school friend of hers (now living 2 states away) had recently visited with her family and said to her husband, "So, what do you want to do with the rest of your life?" While I agree it's a good question-I feel there are certain people who have a privilege to ask it (wives, mothers and of youth- aunts, uncles, grandparents), but for a friend to ask her friends spouse that question... It's just lopsided.

I agreed with my hairdresser. Besides when you're an adult, buying a home, kids are teens-ya kinda know what you're doing with the rest of your life. Probably NOT what you were thinking you'd be doing when you were in your teens.

I asked if she listened to country music-no not really she said. Then I told her about this great song by Darius Rucker. Rucker? she queeried; he was Hootie with Hootie and the Blowfish. You're kidding me!-I sought for verification.

So-he sings some really great country now. Here are two of his songs that say an awful lot about life, living, raising a family and you know-those simple and important things that we do with the rest of our lives.

Darius Rucker, Alright

Alright, Alright
Yeah it's alright, alright

Don't need no five star reservations
I've got spaghetti and a cheap bottle of wine
Don't need no concert in the city
I've got a stereo and the best of Patsy Cline
Ain't got no caviar no Dom Perignon
But as far as I can see, I've got everything I want

Cause I've got a roof over my head,
the woman I love laying in my bed
And it's alright, alright
I've got shoes under my feet
Forever in her eyes staring back at me
And it's alright, alright, yeah
And I've got all I need
And it's alright by me

Maybe later on we'll walk down to the river
Lay on a blanket and stare up at the moon
It may not be no French Riviera
But it's all the same to me as long as I’m with you

It may be a simple life, but that's okay
If you ask me baby, I think I've got it made

Cause I've got a roof over my head,
the woman I love laying in my bed
And it's alright, alright
I got shoes under my feet
Forever in her eyes staring back at me
And it's alright, alright, yeah
And I've got all I need
And it's alright by me

It's alright by me, yeah-yeah
When I lay down at night I thank the Lord above
For giving me everything I ever could dream of

Cause I got-a roof over my head,
the woman I love laying in my bed
And it's alright, alright, alright, alright
I've got shoes under my feet
Forever in her eyes staring back at me
And it's alright, alright, alright
And I've got all I need, yeah
I've got all I need
And it's alright by me
Oh yeah, it's alright by me

Darius Rucker, It Won't Be Like This for Long

He didn't have to wake up
He'd been up all night
Layin’ there in bed listenin’
To his new born baby cry
He makes a pot of coffee
He splashes water on his face
His wife gives him a kiss and says
It gonna be OK

It won’t be like this for long
One day soon we'll look back laughin’
At the week we brought her home
This phase is gonna fly by
So baby just hold on
‘Cause it won't be like this for long

Four years later ‘bout 4:30
She's crawling in their bed
And when he drops her off at preschool
She's clinging to his leg
The teacher peels her off of him
He says what can I do
She says now don't you worry
This’ll only last a week or two

It won’t be like this for long
One day soon you'll drop her off
And she won’t even know you're gone
This phase is gonna fly by
If you can just hold on
It won’t be like this for long

Some day soon she'll be a teenager
And at times he'll think she hates him
Then he'll walk her down the aisle
And he'll raise her veil
But right now she's up and cryin’
And the truth is that he don't mind
As he kisses her good night
And she says her prayers

He lays down there beside her
‘Til her eyes are finally closed
And just watchin’ her it breaks his heart
Cause he already knows

It won’t be like this for long
One day soon that little girl is gonna be
All grown up and gone
Yeah, this phase is gonna fly by
So, he's tryin’ to hold on

‘Cause it won’t be like this for long

It won’t be like this for long

Please note the joy, glee and happiness in the faces of these people and know that we are not at some expensive resort or on an annual vacation. We're just hanging out. Together.
